I agree full heartedly with Greta; however, I can speak from experience that some of these recommendation are NOT practical . See the following examples:
1. Recently, in an emergency room visit, I wrote allover the hospital admission (and consent to teat) form, and asked for a hard copy 'No PROTOCOL INITIATED ( IM, PO, IV) WITHOUT A PRIOR SIGNED INFORMED CONSENT'. The result was: On my hospital notes, the tattooed nurse wrote "patient refuses treatment" , this is the same tattooed nurse who asked me if I knew what an 'Informed Consent' is . Since this is my nearest hospital that I go to in case of emergencies , now I am faced with the ugly task of discovering how I may legally change my hospital records and ask for disciplinary action against the tattooed hippy for falsified records.!
2. At the same emergency room visit mentioned above, I refused to sign a hospital electronic pad that shows absolutely nothing of what am I signing for , only asking you to trust the clerk who is shoving the electronic machine down your face while shouting with a resounding voice ' NEXT, PLEASE'. I asked for a hard copy and this caused a major racket at the desk, all this was taking place while I was feeling miserable as well as concerned about my health.
The US is the country of 'How many burgers can you flip in one minute', for all I know, this may even be the National Anthem!!!
While I greatly value the very good advices presented here, allowance must be made for the negative reactions and treatment you will receive while you are ill and not in your full mental sharpness.
I feel this! It’s extremely hard to get any of your rights safeguarded while in the hospital.
I was given three medications with polyethylene glycol, which I REPEATEDLY told them I’m allergic to.
I was asked for consent to give me morphine which I denied at least twice – it was in all my IVs anyway.
I was never given any information about the fact that I was given fentanyl. So no informed consent there at all.
I was also bullied, badgered, dominated, and forced to take Tylenol in the middle of the night when I was weak and right out of surgery. I do not believe in taking Tylenol due to its glutathione reducing effects. But you try getting an insane bullying nurse to stop harassing you in the middle of the night when you’re weak!
The UC Health System, CO, (a virtual monopoly) requires you to use their keypad, and refuses to let you make changes: The opposite of "informed consent."
Then they are telling who they are and what they will do to you just to make a profit. They would kill you if they thought your death was more financially lucrative to them than your live. They certainly will exhaust your insurance payments at the cost of your health, physical comfort, and well being. I would go to another provider.
If they can't show you what you what you are agreeing to, it's because it is something that no one of sound mind would agree to.
A hospital is a dangerous place for a sick person to be.
Especially with good insurance! You're a walking dollar sign

I have refused, and they have cancelled visits.
Porter is a bit better.

Giving a box of coffe to the nurses will help you survive too.
Melissa you were literally captive…
This person can write all this and I will spend my time initiating as much as possible ,
but in my horrible experience of almost loosing a loved one and us escaping like criminals AND loosing another loved one in the same situation…
This all sounds possible, but reality is what it is…
No physical ‘well’ advocate, while you as a subject are unwell…
One becomes a science experiment very quickly …
Question: when one was in the thro’s of covid and had proxy power, the hospital flat out DENIED my rights claiming “protocol”
I had NO recourse…
What can one do…
Administration refused to meet in person, useless phone calls…
What to do next time?
